Indonesian Journalist Union, SINDIKASI, urges thorough investigation of Abu Akleh’s death

The Jakarta–based Media and Creative Industry Workers Union for Democracy (SINDIKASI) expresses its deepest condolences for the death of Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh. Our sympathy and solidarity goes out towards the families and colleagues of the deceased. Abu Akleh was fatally shot while covering events of a raid by the Israel Defense Forces in the area of the occupied West Bank, Jenin. Al Jazeera reported that Abu Akleh was killed by a gunshot that came from the IDF. We urge a thorough investigation into the perpetrators of the shot that killed Abu Akleh. An independent, transparent, and accountable investigation on Abu Akleh’s killer must be conducted to bring those responsible to trial and prevent casualties from repeating in the future.

Abu Akleh’s death has raised the alarm concerning the safety of journalists in the occupied Palestinian regions. We maintain that this tragedy clearly represents a breach of the Geneva Conventions. According to footage from Al Jazeera, Abu Akleh was wearing a blue helmet and vest marked with the word “Press” at the time she sustained the gunshot. It is undeniable that the shooter had intentionally picked Abu Akleh as their target. SINDIKASI further condemns the killing as an attempt to silence the voice of the Palestinian people currently experiencing occupation by a foreign state. Abu Akleh was known to frequently cover scenes of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces. She has bravely undertaken her task to report the truths about the Israeli occupation.

The killing of Abu Akleh has threatened the freedom of the press and information as well as access to information from the occupied territories. SINDIKASI believes that information regarding events in conflict zones must be rendered clear and transparent to shed light on the injustices that may take place. The safety of journalists is therefore paramount in order to uphold this principle. We call for the international community to work together in the struggle for putting an end to impunity in cases of journalists’ killings, especially in the Israel–Palestinian conflict zones. The growing number of journalists killed in the conflict must stop. The Committee to Protect Journalists recorded that there have been 19 journalists killed in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian territory between 1992 and 2022. We must demand that Abu Akleh be the last among many journalists who have died while covering the conflict.

Serikat Jurnalis SINDIKASI Desak Penyelidikan Menyeluruh Kematian Abu Akleh

Serikat Pekerja Media dan Industri Kreatif untuk Demokrasi (SINDIKASI) menyatakan duka cita yang mendalam atas kematian jurnalis Al Jazeera, Shireen Abu Akleh. Kami juga menyampaikan solidaritas dan simpati pada keluarga dan rekan Abu Akleh. Abu Akleh ditembak ketika meliput penggerebekan oleh Israel Defense Forces di wilayah pendudukan Tepi Barat, Jenin. Al Jazeera melaporkan bahwa ia ditembak oleh Israel Defense Forces. Kami mendesak penyelidikan menyeluruh terkait penyebab penembakan yang mengakibatkan ia terbunuh. Penyelidikan secara independen, transparan, dan akuntabel terkait pembunuhan tersebut harus dilaksanakan untuk membawa mereka yang bertanggungjawab ke pengadilan dan mencegah tragedi serupa terulang.

Pembunuhan itu meningkatkan tanda bahaya tentang keamajan jurnalis di wilayah pendudukan Palestina. Kematian Shireen Abu Akleh jelas–jelas menunjukan pelanggaran terhadap Konvensi Jenewa. Berdasarkan rekaman kejadian, Abu Akleh menggunakan helm dan rompi biru dengan tulisan “Pers” ketika ia ditembak. Ini jelas menunjukan bahwa penembakan tersebut merupakan tindakan yang disengaja. Lebih lanjut, SINDIKASI mengutuk pembunuhan itu karena merupakan upaya untuk membungkam suara rakyat terjajah. Abu Akleh dikenal kerap meliput warga Palestina yang dibunuh oleh tentara Israel. Ia telah melaporkan kebenaran terkait pendudukan Israel.

Pembunuhan Abu Akleh merupakan ancaman kebebasan pers dan informasi serta ancaman terhadap akses informasi ke tanah pendudukan. SINDIKASI percaya bahwa informasi tentang wilayah pendudukan tersebut mesti transparan dan jelas untuk melawan ketidakadilan. Maka dari itu, keamanan jurnalis mesti dijamin untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut. Kami juga menyerukan komunitas internasional untuk bekerja bersama dalam mengakhiri impunitas dalam kasus–kasus pembunuhan jurnalis, terutama dalam konflik Israel–Palestina. Daftar jurnalis yang terbunuh dalam konflik tersebut harus diakhiri. The Committee to Protect Journalists mencatat ada 19 jurnalis terbunuh di Israel dan wilayah pendudukan Palestina antara 1992 hingga 2022. Abu Akleh mesti menjadi jurnalis terakhir yang terbunuh dalam meliput konflik tersebut.
